Joy to the World. HCC Central Dance’s annual celebration of traditional dance takes us from the mountains of Spain to India, Japan and across the Pacific with a stopover in Russia. Our theme this year, Tradition and The Individual, explores the way that dances which once expressed the lives of ancient peoples are being re-vitalized by 21st century choreographers. Rathna Kumar, director of the Anjali Canter for the Performing Arts, will offer a new Bollywood piece, infusing classical Indian dance with Hollywood pizzazz. Kumu Hula Keli'i Chang, director of Houston’s school of Hawai’ian culture, Hâlau Hô'ola Ka Mana O Hawai'i, uses the traditional story-telling moves of hula to tell new tales. 7:30pm. The Invention of Minus One. Jonah Bokaer. DiverseWorks. Commissioned by DiverseWorks with Danspace Project and The National Performance Network (NPN). Making its regional debut, Jonah Bokaer’s Invention of Minus One infuses technology into an exhibition that propels dance and motion-capture techniques into new realms of innovation. While with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Bokaer began using state-of-the-art digital software to develop new movement vocabularies and performance possibilities. Through motion-capture research compiled from a year of epic investigation, Bokaer with his collaborators (video: Michael Cole; costumes: Isaac Mizrahi; sound: Christian Marklay; examines the actual and the virtual, presence and absence.
