Celebrating 30 years of Presenting Dance

Dance Month continues to spotlight prominent choreographers, master teachers, companies, and dancers.

 

Celebrate Dance

Highlighting 30 years of Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre, we will honor June Christensen, Society for the Performing Arts,  Andrea Cody, Dance Houston, Christina Giannelli, Dance Source Houston,  Nancy Henderek, Dance Salad, Sixto Wagan, DiverseWorks, and Jennifer Wood and Louie Saletan Barenevelder Movement/Arts Complex, Houston’s premier presenters who have helped cultivate the Houston Dance Community. Brad Marks, Champion Benefactor of Dance, will be honored for underwriting the I W Marks Master Class Series, which allows hundreds of students to take classes from dance masters from around the world. Brace yourself for an evening of fun with the live world music sounds of Moodafaruka, hors d’oeuvres, prizes and surprises. The dress is casual chic or “dancing fool”.

Houston Ballet II

“Around the World in Seven Dances”

in collaboration with the Children’s Performing Arts Series.

Houston Ballet II’s “Around the World in Seven Dances” teaches the history, culture, and music of the seven continents through ballet.  This multi-media program incorporates traditional world music and instruments in its journey of the seven continents.  Following the performance, party to the beat of the Middle Eastern music and meet the dancers at a post-performance party where you can sample sumptuous delicacies of Israel.

Lehrer Dance

An inspiring and innovative contemporary dance company based in Buffalo, New York.  Under the direction of Jon Lehrer, the company showcases Jon’s unique choreography and embodies his definitive style.  Jon’s extensive background in both the modern and jazz idioms fosters choreography that is organic, artistic, accessible, and often humorous, reflecting life experience and the human condition.

Lehrer Dance Family Favorites

Join us for a “family friendly” interactive exploration of modern and jazz dance.  Attend the Tu B’ Shevat Celebration at the JCC from 1-3pm. and some free tickets are available on a first-come first-serve basis for this performance.

Triple Focus

Enjoy an evening of dance that brings together three professional companies present works ranging in style from jazz to contemporary, commissioned this season are Ad Deum Dance Company, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, and Urban Souls Dance Company.

Dancing the Night Away

Join us for Dancing the Night Away as we continue to celebrate 30 of Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre.  Spend the evening dancing to The Marie Williams Band.  Arrive early for a 45 minute lesson with the JCC’s ballroom dance teacher Johnny Tanon.  Entertaining Dance exhibitions and refreshments included in ticket price.  Seating is limited in the JCC Levit/Haikin Auditorium with its spacious wood floor.

X-Dancing with Alex Arizpe

X-Dancing is a blend between two worlds. The structured, disciplined, technical world of theatrical dance and the raw, unrestricted, free form world of street and

Social dance. The style of X-Dancing takes the fun and joy of free social and street dance moves and blends them with the more controlled and graceful techniques of ballet and jazz.

Contemporary Master Class with Harry Guy, Marlana Walsh-Doyle and Randall Flinn

What a triple treat when the artistic leaders of Triple Focus Dance Concert, Urban Souls Dance Company, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, and Ad Deum Dance Company come together to give a contemporary master class.

The Mark Morris Dance Group

From its early years as Mark Morris and a group of friends, to its contemporary status as a burgeoning dance institution, the Mark Morris Dance Group has stayed true to its founder’s convictions, especially dancing with live music by some of the world’s best musicians.

$3.50 in advance/ $5.00 at the door
